As the nation starts to open again, companies are wondering how to hire the best people to revive their business. 

According to Kevin Parker, the Chief Executive Officer of the interactive video interviewing company HireVue, the main thing to think about are the people. Now they can find that not all of them are needed.

People can expect to have to actually re-interview for their work.

Depending on the reopening policies of each state, new working conditions and other adjustments that should be adopted, the hiring criteria have changed for many employers. As Parker mentioned, recruiters struggled for years to find the right talent.

They are now facing a new world of hundreds of applicants per opening. They’re going to want to hire the most qualified. And several employers are using the on-demand video interview to support this. 

One of the problems businesses are facing when it comes to recruiting staff after the coronavirus is you can’t interviews in an office. The selection process is to be done in a virtual environment. That means interviewing online 24/7. This process may not be familiar to most baby boomers.

How will it work?

The hiring manager produces an online video with some relevant questions for job interviews. You will be given a link from the employer and instructed by the video software to answer these questions. 

There is no recruiter or hiring manager to speak to, only your computer or phone, but you are making your own video response. Prepare for getting situational questions that require your answers to reflect real work experience.

One question, for example, asks you to describe how you used project management in your previous role. Another one asks to define your best technical skills and explain how you’ve used them in the workplace. These kinds of questions often used in interviews are known as situational or behavioral questions.

How will it work?

You will need to provide in-depth answers about your past job experience. Expect these videos to take no more than 20 minutes. It is important to keep in mind that the interview questions you get are the same ones for all applicants that want the same job. Everybody is in the same starting position since you will all answer the same questions.

You’re not speaking eye to eye to anyone. In this kind of interview, there is no Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime. There is no other person involved in your interview. 

However, you still share those answers, so don’t forget to show interest and enthusiasm for the job when answering. You don’t have to ask your own questions. You must, therefore, make the most of the minutes you have when you record your answers. You will have to think about how you communicate, the words you use, and how to exemplify the answer to every question. Smiling is still important, as well as a quiet environment. You have to look professional, so make sure to dress appropriately.

Employers believe that this new on-demand video interview model allows the company to remove any prejudice when interacting with work applicants. According to Parker, many companies continue to be very committed to diversity and inclusion as those are still important values for them. Therefore this interviewing method is an important part of the recruiting process because it will eliminate natural biases that may arise when people interview in person.

Parker stated that employers will look for people that are agile and able to learn and grow. Another critical skill many employers want is the proven ability to solve problems. Baby Boomers should start selling their experience, leadership, and intellect and show how this will help an employer rebuild from this economic shutdown, as stated in the Forbes column last week. 

The World Economic Forum published the top skills employers are looking for in 2020: critical thinking, teamwork, creativity, emotional intelligence, decision-making, being service-oriented, and eagerness to learn new skills. Your technical or hard skills are also important. 

Before recording your responses, try writing down your responses when you get the questions. Then record them.

This will be different after the coronavirus. It is expected for job seekers and people to want stable jobs and to make fewer career changes in the future.

They would not have to deal with commuting costs or expensive apartment hunting, especially if the employer is situated in a high-cost area. In order to attract the best possible talents in this new, highly competitive job market, virtual interviews will be a big deal.
